01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Even when ordered one skewer at a time, the yakitori at Sumibi-yakitori Aki has surprised diners with its generous size. One review praised the skin for being crisp outside and juicy within; ordering a selection to share is part of the appeal. Salt-seasoned heart and seseri (chicken neck) are particular favourites for some. The menu also includes negimi (chicken and spring onion), seserimi and tare-glazed teba teriage (chicken wings), giving diners a choice of cuts and seasonings to compare. One reviewer said the cheese-stuffed tsukune felt as large as two or three meatballs at other restaurants. Since the skewers are substantial, it may be worth starting with a smaller selection if you plan to try several kinds.
Beyond yakitori, the menu offers other ways to enjoy chicken, including grilled liver, liver grilled with sesame oil, chicken tenderloin sashimi and chicken tataki. Some reviewers recommend the liver dishes, which also make tempting plates between rounds of skewers. There are options beyond chicken, too, such as green peppers and shiitake mushrooms stuffed with meat, and seared duck loin. For a light finish, choose duck soup; for a more filling end to the meal, there is duck ramen.
Drinks include a fresh komatsuna shochu highball, a house-made lemon-vinegar highball and sake. One diner enjoyed the komatsuna version as a refreshing drink, and choosing something to pair with the skewers and other dishes is part of the fun. Sumibi-yakitori Aki is in Karea, Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka. Dinner service runs from 17:00 to 23:00, and the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
